Kansas City, Missouri- the site of battle for 130 women’s collegiate
club volleyball teams competing in the 2009 National Tournament.
With 48 teams from across the country fighting for the title in the
Gold Bracket, the road to victory proved to be a challenging one.
The Texas State Women’s Club took on Minnesota, Colorado State,
Michigan, Ohio State, and James Madison University to claim their
5th place position, and best ever finish, in the tournament.
The team started play on Friday morning in the Challenge Round,
which determined whether or not they would get to compete
in the Gold Bracket. After a two game win over Minnesota, the
girls entered into pool play with Colorado State and Michigan.
The Bobcats took a win over Michigan in three games but lost to
Colorado State, which put them in a playoff for the last spot in the
bracket. A re-match and win against Colorado State allowed the
team to move onto Saturday.
Ohio State was the opposition in the first match Saturday morning.
Senior Renee Hewlett-Blanchard claimed the Bobcats were definite
underdogs going into the game. “They were huge, and they
expected to take us out quickly,” Hewlett-Blanchard said. Upset
came to the Buckeyes in a two match victory for the Texas State
girls. That win advanced the team to the quarter finals where they
fell to James Madison University in three.
Though disappointed by the loss, the team was very proud of
how well they did and believes the tournament was their best
performance in years. Kate Kregel received Honorable Mention
based on her individual performance as well. The Bobcats finished
3rd in their conference and 5th in the nation this season and hope to
take these accomplishments to build their strength for next year.
